Integrated IT Structure: ERP Systems

Figure 6 - Three System Landscape
This arrangement of systems can contribute to an efficient work-flow. Changes and
customizations should be done on the development system, which implies that
these do not have an immediate impact on the test environment. It is recommended
that changes and updates are summarized in a change request, which is first
completed in the development system and afterwards imported into the productive
environment. The Three-System-Landscape does not only enable an isolated
testing, but also might be used for testing the transportation before an import into
the productive system is performed. Such a constellation bears great advantages
and provides a high level of security. Disadvantages are not only the higher amount
of administration needed, but also the high system requirements, which most likely
make it less attractive to small companies with limited financial resources (Götz &
Hesseler, 2007, pp. 154-155).

Outside Security: Firewalls
According to Scarfone (2010) firewalls are devices or programs that monitor the
data traffic between networks or hosts that employ differing security postures.
Currently there are several types of firewalls available which are able to act on
different layers.
